Some of the County Council positions are incorporated into a Job Family, more details of which are outlined below. You will be advised in the advert for each position if the post is part of a Job Family and can refer to this additional information as needed.
What is a Job Family?
A Job Family is the name given to a grouping of jobs that have broadly similar roles in terms of their tasks, responsibilities and skills set. For example Catering Employees and Administration Employees. The County Council currently has 11 different Job Families.
Within each Job Family, roles and responsibilities are grouped together into a number of different levels. The number of levels will vary for each Job Family depending on the scope and range of responsibilities and duties.
The pay structure for each Job Family will vary depending on the duties and opportunities for growth and development within the job. An example of how a Job Family pay structure may look like is shown in the diagram below. Each zone represents a different grade. Progress from one zone to another will be determined by performance.

What are the advantages of Job Families?
Job Families help to ensure consistency and equity in pay and to provide career opportunities for all employees working in these roles. They allow an open and transparent approach to roles, pay and terms and conditions of service.
Career progression
Performance and skills will be discussed and assessed in an objective way against the requirements of the role by your line manager at your annual appraisal. Once you each the top of the level you should be ready to progress to a higher-level role. The Council will aim to fill vacancies at the higher levels, when they exist, from internal candidates who are ready to progress.
