Create a CV that works

A CV is the cornerstone of any application you make for a job. It relates your history, conveys your personality and demonstrates how your skills and experience match the job you are applying for. It’s always worth taking the time and trouble to keep it relevant and up-to-date and it’s best to keep the information concise but detailed. Length should not exceed more than two sheets of A4 and should cover the following areas:

Educational achievements

List the institutions you have attended and qualifications gained. Any notable achievements are worth highlighting and don’t forget to include any courses attended.

Employment history

Start with your most recent job and work backwards. Always include a few details on your responsibilities and length of time spent in a particular role/organisation.

Personal interests

This may seem quite a trivial section but it gives a guide to your personality eg. outgoing, creative, caring. Can also be used to flag up work-related skills such as leadership, team player etc.

The Application Process

The five golden rules when completing an application form:

1. Always read and follow any instructions about completing it
2. Use the Additional Information page as your opportunity to show how you have the skills and qualities to match the requirements of the job
3. Include all information you feel is relevant eg. if the job needs a driving licence, make sure you state you have one
4. Don’t make it up – be honest about the qualifications and experience you have
5. Get it in on time

Useful interview techniques

1. Don’t be late for your interview – it does nothing for your reliability or credibility
2. Try to make a good first impression – it can often be crucial in a successful interview
3. Do your homework by finding out information about your prospective employer – it shows you have initiative and a genuine interest in the job
4. Accentuate the positive eg. a lack of experience can be countered by a willingness to learn
5. Don’t be negative about previous employers or positions
6. Be yourself – you want to get the job because it’s right for you
